Clock Cards & Time Cards
Clock cards or time cards as they used to be called are typically pieces of rectangular cardboard that have the hours of the day and the days of the week printed across them.
The areas are sectioned off by horizontal and vertical ruled lines and are designed to accommodate the clock-in and clock-out times that an employee works during their working week.
Most traditional clock cards are used with a mechanical time recorder machine. A time recorder machine is basically a time clock with an insert for employees' to position their clock card and a printing mechanism to print their clock-in and out details.
Usually employees' have their own personalised clock card, so the company's timekeeper can easily identify what hours each member of staff has completed per week.
The History of Clock Cards
Most companies nowadays use time recorders and clock cards to accurately monitor employee working patterns. However back in the early part of 19th century working hours were all logged mainly with handwritten records.
It wasn't until 1888, when Daniel M Cooper invented a time keeping machine, that clock cards were first used as a means of accurately recording employee working hours. The Rochester Recorder, as he named it, was able to print clock-in and clock-out times in assigned areas on a clock card which were marked with the hours of a day and days of week.
Each employee would insert their own clock card into the time recorder machine and pull a lever every time they wished to record a registration point during the day.
Later in the 19th and early 20th century, other inventors created rival time recorder machines which effectively did the same process. But it wasn't until 1911, when several time recorder manufacturers merged to form, what is know today as IBM, that time recorders really started to evolve into the machines we see today. The clock cards themselves, haven't changed a great deal since they were first introduced.
